What brought me here

My name is Marta Guzman and I am the proud mother of 3 very successful students. Originally from Puerto Rico, my husband and I moved to Austin, Texas the same day we got married, 31 years ago. We have 3 kids: Jessica, our oldest is 26, David who is 23, and Gabriel 14. So far, our two oldest kids have both received full scholarships. Jessica, our oldest, has received a total of $138,000. She attended the University of Texas in Austin for her bachelors and completed her first year of graduate school at Boston University. Our son David just graduated from his bachelors from UT Austin as a Millennium Scholar (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation). He received a total of $100,000 for 5 years of school. They both graduated with honors from their respective colleges.

Seeing them receive their scholarships has given us peace of mind. My father use to always say, “Education is the only thing you can leave your child that they can’t lose”.

My husband and I have been asked many times how we accomplished raising such high-achieving, social, happy students that give to the community.

We always thought that as soon as our 14 year old son Gabriel, an honor student,  received his first scholarship, we would start writing our story. Well, he is not old enough to receive a college scholarship, but in April of 2010, we received a call from his school informing us that he had received a scholarship to visit Turkey as part of a language immersion program.

Upon receiving this news, we decided to not wait any longer. We thought it would be beneficial to share what worked, and what did not, during the journey of educating our children.

It has been an exciting, rewarding and joyful road which has only brought us closer. We hope you gain some insight out of our story…:)
